Overview
Venice and its surrounding mainland territory (the terraferma) contain a remarkable density of historic buildings repurposed as cultural spaces: from the grand palazzi of the canal city to the former factories and warehouses of the industrial zones of Marghera and Mestre. The Manganer belongs to this tradition of reclamation, giving new cultural life to a structure whose original industrial or agricultural function has been superseded while its architectural fabric is preserved. Such spaces have become increasingly important in the Venetian cultural scene as alternatives to the island’s more formal and tourist-facing venues.
History
Venice’s industrial history on the mainland accelerated in the early 20th century with the development of the Porto Marghera industrial zone, established from 1917 onward, which brought factories, workers’ housing, and associated infrastructure to the flat lands between Mestre and the lagoon. The broader Venetian metropolitan area also retains numerous former agricultural buildings from the period of the Venetian Republic and the 19th century. Many of these structures, rendered obsolete by deindustrialisation and agricultural change, have been converted into cultural venues, event spaces, and arts centres over recent decades.
What you see
The Manganer Event Space offers the characteristic atmosphere of a repurposed industrial or vernacular building: exposed brick or stone walls, large open floor plans suited to exhibitions and performances, and architectural details that preserve the memory of the building’s original use. The industrial aesthetic, softened by event-focused fitouts and lighting, creates a setting that attracts a wide range of cultural programming — from private receptions to public exhibitions, music events, and corporate gatherings. The surrounding landscape transitions between the urban fabric of Mestre and the lagoon environment of greater Venice.
Cultural significance
Adaptive reuse of industrial and agricultural heritage is one of the defining trends in contemporary Italian cultural policy, translating otherwise at-risk structures into living cultural infrastructure without erasure of their historical character. In the Venice area, where the pressure of tourism and property markets on the historic island creates demand for alternative cultural spaces, mainland venues like the Manganer play an important role in sustaining a vibrant local cultural scene beyond the canal city’s crowded sestieri.
