MAN – Nuoro Art Museum
A contemporary art institution founded in 1999, MAN has evolved into Sardinia’s leading centre for artistic research, exhibitions, and cultural experimentation.
At a glance
The Nuoro Art Museum (MAN) operates as a dynamic laboratory for contemporary artistic practice. The institution hosts rotating exhibitions, lectures, and workshops, attracting regional and national attention since its inception. In 2013, it gained regional recognition as a museum of excellence.
History
MAN emerged in 1999 from the consolidation of public collections held by the Province, Municipality, Provincial Tourist Board, and Chamber of Commerce. What began as a provincial art gallery evolved into an ambitious museum project combining research and conservation with active exhibition programming.
In 2004, the institution acquired managerial autonomy and became Sardinia’s sole member of AMACI, the National Association of Contemporary Art Museums. By 2013, regional recognition confirmed its status as a museum of excellence. Luigi Fassi has served as artistic director since 2018.
What you see
The museum operates from Via Sebastiano Satta while developing an expanded exhibition complex. A development plan underway calls for opening new galleries in two restored historic buildings in Piazza Sebastiano Satta, with the current location serving as home to the permanent collection.
Cultural significance
Over two decades, MAN has established itself as an “open museum”—a permanent laboratory bridging memory and innovation, research and dissemination. The institution emphasizes global artistic perspectives while maintaining deep roots in local cultural contexts. Its work demonstrates how contemporary art institutions can foster both artistic experimentation and community engagement.
