MACRO
A centre for contemporary art housed in a repurposed Peroni brewery, MACRO has become Rome’s leading venue for experimental exhibitions and artistic dialogue with the city.
At a glance
MACRO occupies part of the Peroni Beer Company’s former production complex in the Salario-Nomentano district. The venue functions as both exhibition space and experimental laboratory for contemporary practice, drawing artists and curators seeking a platform for innovation.
History
Designed by Gustavo Giovannoni, the building served the Peroni Company until 1971, then stood largely dormant before conversion. MACRO was established as a municipal museum and remained part of Rome’s Capitoline Superintendence system until 2018, when management transferred to Palaexpo, an agency of Roma Capitale’s Department of Cultural Growth. From October 2018, the institution launched “MACRO Asilo” under artistic director Giorgio de Finis—a collaborative space for artists and public dialogue. In 2020, director Luca Lo Pinto introduced MIP (Museum for the Preventive Imagination), reshaping the venue’s curatorial vision.
What you see
The structure represents a rare example of industrial archaeology in Rome. Giovannoni’s design retains the austere geometry and functional clarity of early twentieth-century factory architecture, now adapted to display contemporary work across multiple gallery spaces.
Cultural significance
MACRO serves as a reference point for contemporary public art in the Italian capital. The institution distinguishes itself through experimental programming and a commitment to emerging artistic voices alongside established practitioners, fostering direct exchange between creators and audience.
