Overview
L’Olivo occupies a privileged position within the Hotel Capri Palace in the upper village of Anacapri, away from the busy port area of the island. The dining room opens onto a terrace that on clear days frames views stretching from the Faraglioni rock stacks to the Amalfi coast. The restaurant’s name refers to the ancient olive groves that historically characterised Capri’s interior landscape before mass tourism reshaped the island.
The menu at L’Olivo draws on the riches of the Gulf of Naples — locally caught fish, island-grown lemons and herbs, buffalo mozzarella from the nearby Terra di Lavoro plain — while applying French-influenced precision to Campanian flavours. The wine list is strongly oriented toward southern Italian producers, with notable Campanian and Sicilian depth.
History
Hotel Capri Palace was established in Anacapri in the 1960s as a retreat for artists and intellectuals, and its restaurant evolved over the following decades as the hotel’s prestige grew. L’Olivo gained its first Michelin star in the early 2000s under the Genovese family’s direction, and subsequently a second star, consolidating its position as one of the finest tables on the island.
Chef Andrea Migliaccio, a Campanian native who trained in France and in major Italian kitchens, has led the kitchen since the mid-2000s, introducing a more rigorous tasting menu format while maintaining the seasonal, ingredient-led approach that defines the restaurant’s identity. The hotel joined the Oetker Collection in 2022, bringing renewed investment in both the property and its culinary programme.
What you see
The dining room at L’Olivo is decorated in a refined Mediterranean palette — white walls, terracotta tones, locally crafted ceramics — that complements rather than competes with the island views beyond the terrace. Service follows the formal rhythm of Italian fine dining: multiple courses, tableside preparation for certain dishes, and a considered progression from light aperitivi to dessert.
A signature feature of the dining experience is the cheese trolley, which showcases a selection of southern Italian and national artisan cheeses rarely assembled with such care in a restaurant setting. The olive oil programme — showcasing Caprese and Campanian oils — reflects the restaurant’s commitment to provenance at every stage of the meal.
Cultural significance
L’Olivo represents the ambition of Campanian fine dining to stand alongside the great restaurants of northern Italy and France, bringing the Mediterranean’s most sun-drenched larder — Amalfi lemons, Gulf-of-Naples seafood, Vesuvian tomatoes — to a setting of genuine luxury. Its sustained Michelin two-star recognition over more than fifteen years marks it as one of the most consistent kitchens in southern Europe.
The restaurant also plays a role in the cultural economy of Capri, drawing a wealthy international clientele to Anacapri rather than concentrating tourism in the more commercial lower town, helping to preserve the quieter character of the island’s upper village.
