Linguaglossa is a town and comune in the Metropolitan City of Catania, Sicily, set on the northern side of Mount Etna. Linguaglossa (Sicilian: Linguarossa) sits on the northern flank of Mount Etna, where a ski resort offers views toward the Ionian Sea. The town was founded on a lava stream in 1566. Its name literally means “Tongue Tongue”, from the Latin lingua and the Greek glôssa, but in fact derives from lingua grossa, short for grossa lingua di lava, “a big tongue of lava”.
History
The town was established in 1566 on the path of an old lava flow on Etna’s northern slopes. Its very name preserves the memory of the volcanic eruption that shaped the site.
