LEO LEV Centre
A contemporary exhibition and cultural venue housed in a restored neoclassical villa, dedicated to advancing knowledge of art and heritage in Leonardo’s birthplace.
At a glance
The LEO LEV Centre is a multifunctional facility serving as a departure point for renewed appreciation of Italian artistic heritage. Located in Vinci, the Tuscan town where Leonardo da Vinci was born, it promotes art, culture and research through exhibitions, events, educational workshops and international initiatives spanning ancient, modern and contemporary periods.
History
The centre occupies Villa Bellio-Baronti-Pezzatini, a neoclassical rural building constructed between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Originally dilapidated and abandoned, the villa underwent complete restoration and requalification under architect Oreste Ruggiero’s direction, preserving its original character while adapting it for contemporary use.
What you see
The villa’s three floors contain exhibition rooms, conference facilities and educational spaces, all retaining their original decorations. Tuscan architectural elements define the exterior: rusticated stonework on the ground floor echoes Florentine pietra forte, while decorative corner stones give the building a fortress-palace appearance.
Piazza Pedretti, the inner courtyard accessed from Via Roma, features commissioned artworks by Oreste Ruggiero: decorative flooring inspired by Leonardo’s Sala delle Asse in Milan’s Sforza Castle, a scenographic fountain, and the Skyline—four brass bas-reliefs depicting the four cities of Tuscan genius: Vinci, Florence, Milan and Amboise. A bookshop offers illustrated publications and design objects, while a park-garden with cafeteria-restaurant extends the grounds toward the valley.
Cultural significance
Positioned in Leonardo’s birthplace, the centre embodies a commitment to enhancing Italian artistic heritage through innovative public engagement. Its mission emphasizes new forms of interaction with artworks and collaborative research, creating an environment fundamentally different from conventional exhibition spaces.
