Lametine Archaeological Museum

A museum dedicated to the millenary history of the Lametine plain, housing artifacts from prehistoric, classical, and medieval periods excavated across this strategically important isthmus territory.

At a glance

The Lametine Archaeological Museum occupies the first floor of the Complex of S. Domenico in Nicastro, a former Dominican convent founded between 1506 and 1521. The building witnessed theological studies by the philosopher Tommaso Campanella and was rebuilt after the 1638 earthquake by the Princes of Aquinas. Following restoration completed in 2006, it reopened as a museum in 2010.

History

The collections trace human presence in the Lametine plain across three millennia. Stone tools and bone remains document Lower Paleolithic occupation dating to 1.8 million–100,000 years ago, with the Casella di Maida site yielding the oldest known prehistoric station in Calabria. Neolithic ceramic fragments with impressed decorations from Curinga excavations demonstrate sophisticated early settlement patterns, while classical and medieval materials illuminate the territory’s role as a strategic crossroads between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas.

What you see

Three permanent sections organize the displays chronologically. The Prehistoric Section features Lower Paleolithic choppers—stone tools created by splintering pebbles—alongside Middle Bronze Age artifacts (circa 1600–1400 BC) and Neolithic ceramics with varied impressed decorations. A highlight is the life-size experimental archaeology laboratory, reconstructing a Neolithic pottery kiln at full scale. Classical and Medieval sections complete the narrative of occupation and trade.

Cultural significance

The museum preserves tangible evidence of continuous human habitation across the Lametine isthmus, a landscape shaped by its geographical position connecting two Mediterranean coastlines. Its collections—assembled through surface survey, systematic excavation, and chance discovery—document the evolution from hunter-gatherer societies through agricultural settlements to classical urban centers, anchoring regional prehistory within a broader Mediterranean context.
