Laboratorium Venice
A working studio in the Sestriere di Santa Croce dedicated to collaborative research between contemporary artists and master craftsmen, exploring manual knowledge and artistic refinement across the Veneto region.
At a glance
Laboratorium Venice operates as a creative laboratory and workshop space in central Venice, near Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio. The project brings together artists and traditional artisans to document, produce, and exhibit collaborative works rooted in craft heritage.
History
Laboratorium Venice emerged from earlier research conducted throughout the Veneto region. The project was formally inaugurated on November 8 at 6:00 pm with a presentation titled “The favorite forms of the mind.” The initiative was promoted by Marino Zancanella and Davide Gabriele in collaboration with multiple artists and craftspeople including Alberto Cottignoli, Diego Valerio Crestani, Marie Malherbe, Marino Lodoli, Piero Meogrossi, Fabio Roncato, Gianni Trevisan, and Wolfgang Zingerle.
What you see
The laboratory functions as a working studio rather than a traditional exhibition space. Visitors encounter ongoing artistic and craft production, video documentation, and fragmentary displays of participating artists’ works. The workshop setting emphasizes process over finished product—guests collaborate with craftspeople while observing and learning manual techniques.
Cultural significance
The project symbolically invokes the eighth day as a moment of rebirth, positioning itself within historical trade routes of refinement—the Amber and Silk Roads. By documenting master craftsmen at work, Laboratorium Venice creates a contemporary bridge between traditional manual knowledge and modern artistic inquiry. The initiative extends beyond Venice to multiple Veneto locations, establishing a network of cultural exchange across workshops and historic sites including Villa Farsetti, Torre dell’Orologio in Noale, and a former Architecture Biennale venue in Badoere.
