La Casaccia Cultural Artistic Center
A multi-disciplinary arts hub in southern Italy where painting, theater, literature, cinema and music converge under one roof.
At a glance
La Casaccia is an association dedicated to contemporary artistic and cultural programming. The Center maintains exhibition galleries for monthly shows, offers annual painting courses, and hosts theater productions, literary events and film screenings. Its evolution from informal artist collective to formalized cultural institution spans more than five decades.
History
The Center’s roots trace to the late 1960s, when a group of young painters and sympathizers gathered at a venue on Corso Umberto to paint and discuss their work. In 1969 the expanding collective relocated to premises on via Municipio, which earned the name “La Casaccia” in reference to their modest condition. Following rapid renovation, the space opened as a functioning artistic and cultural center. The association formally incorporated in 1971.
Over the following decades, La Casaccia attracted collaborating organizations, including an amateur dramatics group that performed sacred representations of the Passion and Death of Christ, utilizing sets designed by Casaccia painters. The Center developed a reputation for diverse programming—personal and group exhibitions, musical evenings, poetry competitions, and courses in literature, drawing, painting and ceramics.
What you see
The Center occupies a converted space featuring a substantial exhibition gallery. Monthly exhibitions display works across multiple artistic media and styles. The flexible venue accommodates visual art displays, theatrical performances, readings and film projections, reflecting its commitment to cross-disciplinary cultural expression.
Cultural significance
La Casaccia represents a grassroots model of cultural development in southern Italy. Beginning as an informal painters’ meeting place, it evolved into an established institution supporting local and visiting artists while fostering broader engagement with theater, literature and cinema. The Center demonstrates how artist-led initiatives can sustain cultural vitality within communities.
