Imperial Forums Museum – Trajan’s Markets
An extensive Roman complex on the Quirinal hill housing five centuries of imperial monumental architecture, now integrated into a single museum experience.
At a glance
Trajan’s Markets form a remarkable layered complex of Roman commercial and administrative buildings that rise against the Quirinal slope. Since 2007, the site has functioned as the Museum of the Imperial Fora, presenting artifacts and architectural fragments from five major imperial forum complexes in a unified narrative.
History
Five monumental forums were erected over approximately 150 years in Rome’s center, immediately adjacent to the Republican Forum. The Forum of Caesar opened in 46 BC, followed by Augustus (2 BC), the Temple of Peace (75 AD), Nerva (98 AD), and finally Trajan (112–113 AD). Trajan’s Markets were built simultaneously with the last forum and a reconstruction of Caesar’s complex. These squares served as ceremonial, administrative, and representational spaces befitting the empire’s capital. The complexes remained partially in use into the early medieval period.
What you see
The site reveals multiple levels of Roman construction adapted to steep terrain. Trajan’s Markets showcase sophisticated urban planning, with warehouses, shops, and administrative offices arranged in tiers. The museum displays architectural fragments and sculptures from each of the five imperial forums within the markets’ original spaces, allowing visitors to examine decorative programs—reliefs, statuary, and ornamental details—that once conveyed imperial power and ideology.
Cultural significance
The Imperial Forums represent some of antiquity’s greatest architectural achievements. Their rich sculptural and decorative programs set standards for provincial cities throughout the empire. The museum’s curatorial approach contextualizes these fragments within their original forums, decoding the celebratory and propagandistic language embedded in relief and sculpture. The site documents topographical change across centuries, from pre-imperial settlement through the medieval period.
