Overview
The property takes its name — “the little springs” — from the natural water sources historically found on the estate, a common feature of Tuscan hill properties that supplied both household use and irrigation for the surrounding agricultural land. The estate sits in the classic Chianti landscape between Florence and Siena, a territory whose combination of hilltop villages, cypress avenues, vineyards and olive groves has made it one of the most photographed rural landscapes in Europe and a protected cultural territory under Italian law.
History
The Chianti hill country between Siena and Florence was intensively settled from Etruscan and Roman times, with the characteristic pattern of isolated farmsteads — poderi — organising agricultural production on the hillsides. The estate’s buildings reflect the typical evolution of a Tuscan agricultural property: a medieval fortified core expanded through Renaissance and Baroque additions as the property grew in prosperity. The region’s wine traditions date to at least the 13th century when the Chianti Classico zone was first officially defined by the Florentine Republic in 1282. Post-war rural depopulation emptied many such estates, which were subsequently restored for tourism and wine production from the 1970s onwards.
What you see
The estate presents the defining elements of the Tuscan hill property: stone buildings with terracotta-tiled roofs, a loggia overlooking the valley, a formal garden with cypress and rosemary hedges, and an infinity pool positioned to maximise the views over rolling hills to the south. Interiors retain original stone floors, exposed beams and vaulted ceilings typical of medieval and Renaissance Tuscan construction. Surrounding the property, working vineyards and olive groves continue the agricultural tradition of the estate, with wine and olive oil production often available to guests.
Cultural significance
The Chianti landscape surrounding Hotel Le Fontanelle is recognised as an outstanding example of historic cultural landscape, reflecting centuries of interaction between human settlement, agriculture and natural terrain. The area falls within the territory celebrated in Renaissance painting — the same hillsides depicted as backgrounds in works by Leonardo, Ghirlandaio and their Florentine and Sienese contemporaries. The estate exemplifies the Tuscan agriturismo model that has preserved traditional architectural fabric while making it economically viable in the contemporary world.
