Overview

Honduras is a republic in Central America with a population of approximately 10 million people. The country covers an area of 112,492 square kilometres, making it the second-largest nation in Central America. It is bounded to the north and east by the Caribbean Sea, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the west by Guatemala, and to the southeast by Nicaragua. The name Honduras, meaning “depths” in Spanish, is attributed to Christopher Columbus, who reportedly noted the deep waters off the northern coast during his 1502 voyage.

History

The territory of present-day Honduras was inhabited by diverse pre-Columbian civilisations, most notably the Classic Maya who built the city of Copán between the 5th and 9th centuries CE. Spanish colonisation began in earnest after Columbus’s 1502 landing, and the region was incorporated into the Captaincy General of Guatemala. Honduras declared independence from Spain in 1821 as part of the Central American Federation, and became a fully independent republic in 1838. The 19th and 20th centuries were marked by political instability, the influence of United Fruit Company banana plantations, and recurrent conflicts, including the brief 1969 Football War with El Salvador.

What you see

Honduras offers visitors a remarkable range of cultural and natural heritage sites. The Maya ruins of Copán in the western highlands are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for their extraordinary sculptural stelae and hieroglyphic stairway. The Bay Islands off the northern Caribbean coast — including Roatán — are renowned for coral reefs and colonial history. The historic colonial city of Comayagua preserves one of the finest collections of Spanish colonial architecture in Central America, including the 17th-century Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

Cultural significance

Honduras is home to one of the most important Maya sites in the world at Copán, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, which provides crucial insights into Classic Maya art, writing and astronomy. The country’s diverse cultural heritage — spanning pre-Columbian, Spanish colonial and mestizo traditions — represents a significant chapter in the history of the Americas. Honduras has also been a crossroads of Caribbean, Central American and indigenous cultures, reflected in its music, textiles and craft traditions.
