Historical Museum of Military Motorization

Italy’s sole comprehensive collection of twentieth-century military vehicles, spanning three hundred cars, trucks, motorcycles and aircraft, alongside rare civilian models used during the World Wars.

At a glance

The museum houses over three hundred units of vintage military and civilian transport—cars, trucks, motorcycles, armored vehicles and light aircraft. Six exhibition pavilions occupy approximately fifty thousand square meters in a purpose-built complex on Rome’s southern edge, featuring a library-archive and documentary materials spanning military motorization history.

History

Founded in 1955 by the Chief of the automotive body, the museum began in confined spaces before relocating in 1991 to its current site. The move followed restoration of pre-existing infrastructure—structures originally designed for the Military Motorization School’s educational programs, dating from the early twentieth century.

What you see

The sprawling complex combines wide avenues, extensive green areas and distinctive “card-shaped” pavilions characteristic of early-century design. Six exhibition halls organize the collection. One pavilion, dedicated to the Arturo Mercanti Gold Medal, houses the administration, a comprehensive library-archive with technical documentation and photographs of Army vehicles from their origins onward, and a large wall map depicting General Cadorna’s 1916 Trentino maneuver—the first military operation to employ motor transport at scale.

Cultural significance

The collection traces Italy’s motorization during its most transformative period. Highlights include the Fiat 501 Torpedo and Fiat 513 model 4 (1910), the latter used by King Vittorio Emanuele III on front-line visits; the rare Lancia Astura Lince armored car (1942); and vehicles central to Italian military logistics, such as the Spa Dovunque 35 and Fiat 18 BL. The museum also preserves the ambulance featured in the film *Addio alle Armi* (1932).
