Overview
Reggio Calabria is the largest city in Calabria and one of the oldest urban centres of Magna Graecia, with a metropolitan area of over 511,000 inhabitants. Situated at the very tip of the Italian peninsula opposite Messina, it enjoys a famously mild climate and one of the most spectacular seafront settings in Italy. The Historic Park Old Villa occupies a stretch of the Lungomare Falcomatà, a seafront promenade widely celebrated as the most beautiful kilometre in Italy, and forms the green heart of the city’s historic waterfront.
History
The park was created in the nineteenth century to provide Reggio Calabria with a dignified public garden befitting a provincial capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, and later of unified Italy. It was planted with allées of palms, magnolias, and exotic species, reflecting the Italian fashion for civic promenades during the Umbertine era. After the catastrophic earthquake of 28 December 1908, which destroyed most of the city and caused tens of thousands of casualties, the park was restored as part of the comprehensive urban reconstruction and became a symbol of civic renewal. Further improvements throughout the twentieth century consolidated its status as the most loved green space in Reggio.
What you see
Ornate iron gates lead visitors into shaded paths lined with palms, magnolias, and specimen trees planted over more than a century. Decorative fountains, marble busts of notable figures, and small period pavilions punctuate the grounds. The park’s western edge opens directly onto the Strait of Messina, with benches and low balustrades offering panoramic views of the water and the Sicilian coast. In the late afternoon the promenade fills with locals in the traditional passeggiata, a social ritual that has defined life on the Lungomare for generations.
Cultural significance
The Villa Comunale Vecchia is inseparable from the civic identity of Reggio Calabria, appearing in local poetry, painting, and song as the emblematic image of the city. It stands close to the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia, which houses the renowned Riace Bronzes, forming part of a cultural waterfront that draws visitors from across Italy and abroad.
