Overview

Guglielmo Marconi Airport is owned and operated by Aeroporto di Bologna S.p.A., a publicly listed company with the city of Bologna as its main shareholder. It is the fourth busiest airport in Italy by passenger volume and a key hub for low-cost carriers connecting central Europe with southern Italy and Mediterranean destinations. A dedicated automated people-mover train, the Marconi Express, has linked the terminal to Bologna Centrale railway station since 2022, integrating the airport into the national high-speed rail network.

History

The airfield at Borgo Panigale was established in 1931 for military and early commercial aviation. After World War II it was rebuilt as a civil airport and progressively expanded as Bologna grew into a major industrial and trade-fair city. The naming in honour of Guglielmo Marconi — inventor of long-distance radio transmission, born at Villa Griffone near Sasso Marconi in 1874 — was formalised in the 1990s. The 2012 terminal extension brought the airport to its present form, with a single main terminal and satellite pier.

What you see

The main terminal building is a compact, well-signposted single-hall structure with departures on the upper level and arrivals below. Public art installations in the terminal reflect Bologna’s identity as a UNESCO Creative City of Music and a hub of Italian craft and design. The Marconi Express automated train station is integrated with the terminal building, offering a 7-minute non-stop connection to Bologna Centrale. Typical facilities include duty-free retail, lounges, and connections to car-hire desks.

Cultural significance

As the airport of one of Italy’s most historically rich cities — home to the world’s oldest university, medieval towers, and a UNESCO-listed city centre — Bologna Marconi is the entry point for cultural tourism across Emilia-Romagna, from the Dolomites to the Adriatic Riviera. The Marconi brand places the airport within a narrative of Italian scientific heritage that resonates internationally.

Practical information

The airport operates 24 hours. The Marconi Express train runs every 12 minutes to Bologna Centrale (7 minutes journey). Aerobus 35 is a cheaper bus alternative (25 minutes to the city centre). Taxis and ride-share are available outside the arrivals hall. For current flight information visit the official airport website: bologna-airport.it.
