Casa di Giulietta

A fourteenth-century Gothic palazzo on the ancient Roman cardo maximus, famous for its stone balcony and its association with Shakespeare’s tragic heroine.

At a glance

Casa di Giulietta stands on Via Cappello, one of Verona’s oldest thoroughfares. The house belonged to the Dal Cappello family, prosperous spice merchants who expanded their medieval tower-houses over centuries. Today it functions as a museum, drawing visitors drawn to its literary fame and authentic medieval-Renaissance architecture.

History

The Dal Cappello family established themselves here with two adjacent medieval towers, later augmented by Renaissance construction. The house evolved gradually, acquiring the fourteenth-century Gothic additions and sixteenth-century wings visible today. A souvenir shop and theater foyer now occupy spaces that once formed a larger original courtyard.

What you see

The entrance hall opens to a courtyard framed by a Gothic portico whose lowered arch bears the Dal Cappello family emblem—a hat. A striking stone balcony adorns the adjoining fourteenth-century facade, visible from the right as visitors enter. Plasterboard panels flanking the entrance hall display love notes and signatures left by visitors. The complex reflects layered construction spanning the medieval and Renaissance periods, though later twentieth-century modifications have altered the courtyard’s original proportions.

Cultural significance

The house owes much of its renown to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, though no historical Juliet lived here. The balcony has become iconic in popular imagination as the setting of literature’s most famous scene. Beyond romantic association, the building documents Verona’s merchant families and urban development along Roman foundations, illustrating how medieval and Renaissance Verona built upon classical urban planning.
