Giardino dei Tarocchi
A visionary open-air sculpture garden where French-U.S. artist Niki de Saint Phalle transformed Tuscan countryside into a kaleidoscopic realm of steel, concrete and color inspired by tarot’s major arcana.
At a glance
The Tarot Garden is a 2-hectare contemporary art park populated by monumental sculptures and architectural forms clad in colored glass, mirrors and ceramics. Each structure corresponds to a card from the tarot deck, creating an immersive symbolic landscape.
History
Niki de Saint Phalle began construction in 1979, inspired by her visits to Antoni Gaudí’s Parque Güell in Barcelona and the garden of Bomarzo. The project emerged from her fascination with combining architectural ambition, spiritual symbolism and folk-art materials into a unified artistic vision.
What began as a personal creative journey evolved into one of Italy’s most distinctive contemporary art spaces, drawing visitors from across Europe and beyond.
What you see
Towering steel and concrete figures dominate the landscape, their surfaces ablaze with fragments of mirror, mosaic tile and colored glass that catch and scatter sunlight. The sculptures vary dramatically in scale and character, from intimate chambers to colossal figures that command the Tuscan terrain.
Each work channels the energy and archetypal imagery of its corresponding tarot card—The Fool, The Magician, The Empress, The Devil and others—translated into three-dimensional form through Saint Phalle’s unmistakable visual language.
Cultural significance
The garden represents a rare fusion of contemporary sculpture, visionary art and landscape design. Saint Phalle’s work challenged conventional distinctions between fine art and environmental design, prefiguring contemporary debates about art’s role in public space.
The project demonstrates how personal spiritual inquiry and feminist artistic practice could transform an entire terrain, establishing the Tarot Garden as a pilgrimage site for artists, designers and seekers drawn to utopian and esoteric themes in modern art.
