GAM – Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art
Turin’s principal museum of nineteenth and twentieth-century art, housing over 47,000 works across painting, sculpture, installation and video.
At a glance
The Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art (GAM Turin) anchors the city’s artistic heritage from the industrial age to the present day. Part of the Torino Musei Foundation, it shares governance with three other significant museums: the MAO (Museum of Oriental Art), Palazzo Madama (medieval and Renaissance collections), and Casaforte degli Acaja (ancient art).
History
Founded around 1891–95, the gallery emerged during Turin’s transformation into a modern industrial centre. The collection has grown substantially over more than a century, reflecting the city’s cultural ambitions. In 2009, curators reimagined the permanent display, abandoning strict chronological order in favour of thematic groupings. A further reorganization in 2013, marking the 150th anniversary of the collections, introduced four principal viewing paths: Infinito, Velocita, Etica and Natura.
What you see
The gallery presents over 47,000 artworks spanning multiple media and movements. Paintings, sculptures, installations and videos form the core holdings. The basement level accommodates rotating exhibitions and houses a substantial video library, extending the museum’s reach beyond the main galleries.
Cultural significance
GAM Turin documents the artistic evolution of Italy and Europe across two centuries of profound change. The thematic organization—connecting concepts of infinity, speed, ethics and nature—encourages visitors to trace ideas across periods and styles rather than simply following chronological progression. This approach reflects contemporary museum philosophy and deepens engagement with the works.
