Overview

The Futurium, also known as Futurium Museum and Musée Futurium, is a museum with futuristic exhibitions and a hands-on laboratory. It is an initiative of Germany’s major scientific institutions and the Cabinet of Germany, conceived as a neutral space for public dialogue on science, research, and development. Situated on the Spree riverbank near the Hauptbahnhof, the building’s prominent glass facade signals its mission as an open, accessible forum for all citizens.

History

The concept behind the Futurium grew from a federal desire to create a public platform where German research institutions could engage directly with society on the big questions facing humanity. Planning and construction extended over several years before the museum’s inauguration in September 2019. The project united more than two dozen partner organisations — including major scientific societies, universities, and federal ministries — under a single roof dedicated to futures literacy. Since opening, the Futurium has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors and established itself as a model for science communication in Europe.

What you see

The permanent exhibition is divided into three thematic worlds — Nature, Human, and Technology — each exploring a different dimension of possible futures through interactive installations, films, and objects. A freely accessible Futurium Lab on the ground floor offers workshops and making-space where visitors can experiment with digital tools and prototypes. The building’s roof terrace provides panoramic views over the Spree toward the Reichstag and the government quarter, reinforcing the museum’s location at the symbolic heart of German democracy and science.

Cultural significance

The Futurium represents a new model of civic science institution, one that treats futures thinking as a public good rather than the preserve of specialists. By making all permanent exhibitions free of charge, it embodies a commitment to democratic access to knowledge about technological and social change. Its location adjacent to Berlin’s Federal ministries gives it unique symbolic weight as a place where citizens and policymakers meet around shared questions about what kind of future Germany — and the world — wishes to build.
