Fryderyk Chopin Museum
Home to the world’s largest collection devoted to the Polish composer, housing over 7,500 pieces including manuscripts, letters, and personal effects spanning two centuries.
At a glance
The Fryderyk Chopin Museum occupies Ostrogski Castle in Warsaw’s city centre, serving as headquarters for the Fryderyk Chopin Institute since 1953. The institution encompasses the Museum itself alongside the Institute’s Library, Music Library, and Photo Library, making it a comprehensive research and exhibition facility dedicated to one of classical music’s most influential composers.
History
The museum’s origins trace to the 1930s founding of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. The earliest acquisitions came through Chopin’s great-granddaughter, who donated 13 handwritten scores including the Trio in G minor Op. 8 for piano, violin and cello.
After World War II, the Institute was reactivated in 1945 with Warsaw headquarters on Zgoda Street. Since 1953, Ostrogski Castle has served as its permanent home. The most valuable pieces—autographs, letters, and portraits—were acquired primarily through international antique dealers and auction houses.
