Overview
Francavilla al Mare is a town and comune in the province of Chieti, in the Abruzzo region of Italy. It lies on the Adriatic coast immediately south of Pescara, forming part of the densely settled coastal corridor of central Abruzzo. The town pairs a popular beach resort along the shoreline with an older centre on the rising ground behind it.
History
The settlement developed historically on the hill above the coast, in the typical defensive pattern of Adriatic towns, before expanding toward the sea in the modern era. During the twentieth century Francavilla grew as a seaside destination, with the lower town along the beach developing alongside the historic upper nucleus. Wartime damage in the mid-twentieth century affected the coastal corridor of Abruzzo, after which the town was rebuilt and continued to expand.
What you see
The town divides between a broad seafront with a long sandy beach and promenades, and an upper historic quarter on the hillside. The two areas are linked by streets that climb from the coast. Churches and civic buildings mark the higher centre, while the lower town is given over to the resort life of cafés, bathing establishments and the lungomare.
Cultural significance
Francavilla al Mare holds a place in the cultural life of the Abruzzo coast, having attracted artists and writers drawn to the region. Today it is one of the established seaside resorts of the central Adriatic, valued for its beaches and coastal setting.
Practical information
The seafront and historic centre are freely accessible. The beach is busiest in the summer season. Opening hours for churches, museums and civic sites vary; check official local tourism resources before visiting.
Getting there
Francavilla al Mare lies on the Adriatic railway line and has its own station, with frequent regional connections to Pescara and along the coast. By car it is reached via the coastal roads and the nearby A14 Adriatic motorway. Pescara airport is a short drive to the north.
