History
The fortress was reconstructed in the 19th century by the House of Savoy as a military stronghold overlooking the strategic pass at Bard. After years of neglect, the fort underwent total restoration guided by principles of design integrity and conservative practice. The reopening to visitors occurred in January 2006, marking the beginning of its second life as a cultural institution.

The fortified complex occupies a dramatic rocky promontory above the village. Its 19th-century masonry and defensive structures remain visible, enhanced rather than obscured by restoration work that respected the building’s original form and materials.
Cultural significance
The fort now hosts rotating exhibitions spanning ancient, modern, contemporary and photography art, alongside three established permanent collections: the Museum of the Alps, Children’s Alps, and The Prisons. A fourth permanent exhibition, Il museo del Forte, is in development. The site represents both military heritage and contemporary cultural practice.
