Former Convent of St. Francis of Paola

An 18th-century chapel complex, originally built beneath a convent, now preserved as a museum center with frescoes and sculpture from Sicily’s baroque period.

At a glance

This former convent chapel houses important works by Sicilian baroque artists. The structure grew over more than a century, from initial construction of the main chapel and side altars to final decoration in the early 1800s. Today it functions as a museum center.

History

Until the 18th century, a small structure occupied a room beneath the convent of St. Francis of Paola. Building began with the large chapel and two side chapels flanking the high altar between 1701 and 1732. The remainder of the structure was completed in subsequent years, with interior decoration added only in the early 19th century. The building was later restored and opened as a museum center.

What you see

The chapel follows a single-nave plan with transepts and a dome. Francesco Cutrona of Trapani executed frescoes across the vaults of the nave, chapel, and transept. The dome itself displays 18th-century frescoes attributed to Vito D’Anna, representing the period’s ornamental sophistication. A wooden statue of St. Francis of Paola, carved by Girolamo Bagnasco, stands within the chapel as a focal devotional object.

Cultural significance

The chapel represents Sicilian baroque taste in both architecture and decoration. The collaboration among local sculptors and fresco painters—Bagnasco, Cutrona, and D’Anna—documents the island’s artistic networks during the 17th and 18th centuries. Its survival as a museum center preserves this heritage for contemporary study and appreciation.
