Faraglioni di Capri

Three dramatic rocky peaks rise from the Tyrrhenian Sea off Capri’s south-eastern coast, their stark silhouettes framed by the island’s famous gardens and steeped in geological and natural history.

At a glance

The Faraglioni comprise three principal rock formations: the Faraglione di Terra, connected to the mainland; the Faraglione di Mezzo, separated by water; and the Faraglione di Fuori, extending furthest seaward. A fourth formation, the Monacone rock, lies behind them. These sea stacks have commanded attention for centuries, both as geological landmarks and as habitats for unique species.

History

The rocks bear traces of human occupation from Roman times. Masonry remains found on the formation have been attributed, without firm evidence, to a tomb belonging to Masgaba, architect to Augustus. Alternative interpretations suggest the structures served as fish-salting tanks or enclosures for rabbit husbandry—practical functions more consistent with ancient coastal settlement patterns.

The Monacone rock owes its name to marine oxen, a species of Mediterranean seal that inhabited the area until 1904, when the last individual was killed at Palazzo a Mare.

What you see

The Faraglioni present a striking natural spectacle of limestone and rock formations sculpted by erosion. The Faraglione di Fuori commands particular attention as the sole natural habitat of the blue lizard, a species endemic to the rock. Roman masonry fragments remain visible on the formations, though their precise original purpose remains debated among scholars.

Cultural significance

The Faraglioni have achieved worldwide renown largely through the panoramic vistas offered by the gardens of Augustus, which frame these geological monuments in one of the Mediterranean’s most celebrated viewpoints. The formations embody the dramatic interplay between human aesthetic appreciation and natural history. The presence of the endemic blue lizard adds biological importance to their geological interest.
