Erice

A medieval hilltop town in northwestern Sicily, Erice perches at 751 meters on Monte Erice with views across the Tyrrhenian Sea. Once called Monte San Giuliano, this settlement preserves centuries of Norman architecture and mythological heritage.

At a glance

Erice is a fortified town occupying the summit of its namesake mountain in the province of Trapani. The historic center houses roughly 1,024 residents year-round, though the population swells dramatically in summer. Most inhabitants live downstream in the adjacent town of Casa Santa, near Trapani itself.

History

The town’s name derives from Erix, a figure from Greek mythology—son of Aphrodite and Butes, said to have been killed by Heracles. From 1167 until 1934, Erice bore the name Monte San Giuliano, reflecting the Christian devotion that shaped its medieval identity. The change of name in 1934 restored the classical mythological reference.

What you see

The city center crowns the mountain summit, creating a dramatic vertical composition typical of Norman Sicily. Medieval stone buildings, narrow streets, and defensive fortifications characterize the urban fabric. The elevation provides panoramic views across the surrounding landscape and coastline.

Cultural significance

Erice represents a rare surviving example of a complete medieval hilltop settlement in Sicily. Its continuity of habitation and preservation of Norman-era urban planning make it valuable for understanding medieval Mediterranean town life. The layering of mythological and religious significance—from pagan Erix to Christian Monte San Giuliano to modern Erice—embodies Sicily’s cultural crossroads.
