Overview
DumBO is Bologna’s most significant post-industrial cultural transformation project of the 21st century. The former industrial complex — originally home to manufacturing facilities in the city’s historically working-class western quarter — was acquired and progressively converted into a mixed-use creative campus where commercial, civic, and cultural activities coexist without strict zoning. History
Bologna’s western industrial arc developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries alongside the city’s railway infrastructure, creating a belt of factories, workshops, and workers’ housing that defined the social geography of the “red city” for generations. As deindustrialisation reshaped the European urban economy from the 1980s onward, many of these sites fell into disuse. The DumBO project was conceived in the 2010s as a vehicle for adaptive reuse aligned with Bologna’s established model of cooperative social enterprise, drawing on successful precedents such as Manifattura Tabacchi in Florence and BASE in Milan. The site opened progressively from 2017 to 2018, with its open-air public park and main event spaces inaugurated in 2018.

Getting there
DumBO is located in the Bolognini district, approximately 3 km west of Bologna Centrale railway station. By public transport, take TPER bus lines from the city centre (lines serving Via Zanardi / Via Emilia Ponente direction). By bicycle, the site is accessible via Bologna’s cycle network (BiciBO routes). Street parking is available in the surrounding residential streets. Bologna Centrale is served by Trenitalia and Italo high-speed trains from Milan (approximately 1 hour), Florence (approximately 35 minutes), and Rome (approximately 2 hours).
