Diocesan Museum – Old and New Church of Donnaregina

A baroque church reopened as a diocesan museum showcases centuries of Neapolitan religious art, from medieval treasures to paintings by master artists including Solimena, Stanzione and Luca Giordano.

At a glance

The Diocesan Museum occupies a baroque church that remained closed for many years before reopening to display sacred art spanning medieval to baroque periods. The 3,000-square-metre space arranges paintings, sculptures, frescoes and precious objects thematically—following the narrative of Christian faith as lived in Naples.

History

The church’s closure preceded its transformation into a diocesan museum, allowing works long stored in deposits and safes to be exhibited publicly for the first time. The reopening restored access to significant artworks acquired over centuries of Neapolitan religious practice and patronage.

What you see

Two distinct thematic paths structure the collection: the medieval section and the baroque section. On the nave floor, inlaid representations honour San Gennaro, Naples’ patron saint, and Mary as a model of Christian life. Upstairs galleries progress through the Mystery and Sacrifice of Christ, followed by works depicting Martyrs and Consecrated Life. The Sala dei Preziosi houses a rare 12th-century Stauroteca containing a fragment of the Cross of Christ, and a 14th-century tempera panel with gold background portraying Archbishop Umberto d’Ormont.

Cultural significance

The collection represents the visual theology of Naples’ religious community expressed through art. Works by Flemish and Italian masters—including Paolo de Matteis, Andrea Vaccaro, Aniello Falcone and Marco Pino da Siena—illuminate Christian mysteries and the veneration of saints central to Neapolitan spirituality. The museum serves both as a repository of faith’s artistic expression and as a cultural mirror of the city’s spiritual history.
