Costume Gallery – Pitti Palace
A museum dedicated to fashion and dress history, housed in the Palazzina della Meridiana, an elegant pavilion within Florence’s celebrated Pitti Palace complex.
At a glance
The Costume Gallery preserves and displays Italian and European fashion from the eighteenth century to the modern era. Located in a dedicated wing of Pitti Palace accessible from both the palace and the Boboli Gardens, it rotates selections from its substantial collection every two years, allowing visitors to encounter different garments and the craftsmanship of historical dress-making.
History
The Palazzina della Meridiana was commissioned by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of Lorena in 1776. Architect Gaspare Paoletti began construction on the southern side of Pitti Palace and continued until 1813, with assistance from Giuseppe Cacialli. Pasquale Poccianti completed the work a decade later, designing the southern façade and directing the interior decoration program.
After more than a century of closure, the building reopened in 2007, revealing its original splendours: a sundial by Vincenzo Viviani and frescoes created by Anton Domenico Gabbiani for Grand Prince Ferdinando.
What you see
The pavilion exemplifies late eighteenth-century Florentine design with its refined southern façade and carefully appointed rooms. Inside, Gabbiani’s frescoes and Viviani’s sundial attest to the building’s former use as a Grand Ducal retreat. Display cases showcase individual garments alongside accessories, undergarments, and bedroom textiles, each accompanied by technical documentation and conservation notes.
Cultural significance
The Costume Gallery represents an early and pioneering effort in Italy to preserve and study historical dress as a serious museum discipline. From its first exhibitions (1983–1993), the collection approached fashion chronologically, treating garments as primary historical documents. Detailed catalogs and scholarly essays on costume history and preservation methods have established the museum as a significant resource for fashion historians and conservators.
