Sanctuary of Maria Santissima Gibilmanna

A monastic sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary, perched at 800 metres above sea level on the Madonie mountains and traditionally attributed to Saint Gregory the Great in the 6th century.

At a glance

The Sanctuary of Maria Santissima Gibilmanna is a working monastery and spiritual centre in the Madonie range near Cefalù. Located on the western slopes of Pizzo Sant’Angelo, the complex encompasses a convent, church, and guest facilities that continue to host retreats, cultural events and pilgrimages.

History

According to tradition, Saint Gregory the Great—before his election as pontiff in 590—founded this monastery around 540 as one of six Benedictine communities built at his own expense. The monastic complex deteriorated in the 9th century during the Arab incursions of 858, after which hermits maintained the church. The Norman conquest initiated reconstruction efforts; a 1178 document confirms the church’s continued existence. By 1228 it had become a priory, separating from Benedictine control, and in 1279 passed to an Augustinian friar. In the 16th century, Capuchin Franciscan friars arrived and took guardianship. The priest Antonio Lo Duca served as prior in the early 1500s and promoted construction of the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Rome.

What you see

The sanctuary sits within a forest of oak and chestnut trees at approximately 850 metres elevation on the western side of Pizzo Sant’Angelo. The monastic buildings form a coherent complex that has been rebuilt and restored across centuries. The structures include the main church, convent facilities, and the Casa di Accoglienza Santa Chiara, a modern guest house for pilgrims and retreat groups.

Cultural significance

Gibilmanna remains an active centre of spiritual devotion and cultural activity. Classical and contemporary music concerts, academic conferences and art exhibitions regularly take place within its structures. The sanctuary’s association with Saint Gregory the Great has made it an important pilgrimage destination, particularly during jubilee celebrations honouring the saint’s legacy.
