Convent of San Francesco, Capuchin Friars
A 17th-century Capuchin monastery perched on the slopes of San Cristoforo, offering spiritual retreats and a sacred stopping point on the Via dei Santuari pilgrimage route through Cinque Terre.
At a glance
The Convent of San Francesco stands on the steep San Cristoforo hillside overlooking Monterosso al Mare. Ranked first in the 2014 FAI national census of “The places of the heart,” this working monastery welcomes guests for spiritual retreats, study programmes and meditation.
History
Construction began in the 17th century on the challenging terrain of San Cristoforo’s slope. The adjoining Church of San Francesco, dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, was consecrated in 1623. The convent became a significant centre of Capuchin spirituality in the Cinque Terre region, developing its present role as a retreat house over subsequent centuries.
What you see
The complex comprises the church and monastery buildings integrated into the landscape. The church’s dedication to Saint Francis reflects the Capuchin order’s spiritual heritage. The structures follow the architectural constraints of their hillside location, with Salita dei Cappuccini (the Capuchin Path) providing steep access from the village below.
Cultural significance
The convent is a major station on the Via dei Santuari, a 27-kilometre pilgrimage route running parallel to the coast through the five villages of Cinque Terre. This “Way of Sanctuaries” connects five locations where veneration of the Virgin Mary has been practised since the Middle Ages, creating a sustained spiritual journey through the hinterland landscape.
