Convent of Isola San Francesco del Deserto
An island monastery in the Venetian Lagoon where St. Francis of Assisi is believed to have landed in 1220, now home to a contemplative Franciscan community and a rare wetland ecosystem.
At a glance
San Francesco del Deserto occupies approximately 4 hectares between Sant’Erasmo and Burano. The convent houses Franciscan friars and offers cells for retreats focused on prayer and religious study. More than a thousand trees—pines and cypresses—shelter migratory birds across the lagoon’s mystical silence.
History
Legend holds that St. Francis of Assisi landed on the island in 1220 while returning from Egypt, seeking refuge from a storm after preaching to the sultan during the Fifth Crusade. The saint established a shelter for prayer and meditation far from worldly distractions.
In March 1233, after Francis’s death, the Venetian patrician Jacopo Michiel donated the island to the minor friars to found a convent. By the fifteenth century, malaria and inhospitable conditions forced abandonment, though occupation resumed within decades.
Napoleonic forces occupied the island in 1806, plundering the monastery and church. Religious suppression forced the community to relocate to San Bonaventura in Venice. Austrian forces subsequently used the site as a powder magazine until 1858, when the Patriarchate of Venice returned the land to the friars to refound the monastery—which continues today.
What you see
The monastic complex integrates with its natural surroundings rather than dominating them. The convent provides fifteen cells for individual retreat, two large rooms for study groups, and a refectory for communal meals. The plundered church retains its essential character.
Cultural significance
The island represents a rare intersection of Franciscan spirituality, medieval Venetian patronage, and lagoon ecology. Archaeological finds in the subsoil indicate Roman-era settlement, extending the site’s historical continuum. The 2020 commemoration of eight hundred years since Francis’s arrival prompted renewed focus on conservation of both the religious community and its irreplaceable natural habitat.
