Civic Archaeological Museum of Bologna
Housed in the Renaissance Galvani Palace since 1881, this major Italian archaeological museum preserves the material culture of Bologna from prehistory through the Roman period.
At a glance
One of Italy’s finest archaeological collections, the Civic Archaeological Museum occupies a fifteenth-century palace in Bologna’s historic center. Its holdings span local prehistory, Etruscan settlement, and the Roman city of Bononia, drawn from the University Museum, the Pelagio Palagi donation, and systematic excavations across the region from the late nineteenth century onward.
History
The museum’s official inauguration took place on 25 September 1881, when its collections were moved into Galvani Palace. The holdings derive from three principal sources: the ancient University Museum, a significant bequest from painter Pelagio Palagi, and archaeological fieldwork conducted in Bologna and surrounding territory from the end of the nineteenth century into the twentieth century. This combination of sources ensured the museum captured both institutional knowledge and newly excavated material.
What you see
The museum occupies Galvani Palace, a Renaissance structure characteristic of fifteenth-century Bolognese architecture. The palace’s dignified rooms provide the setting for chronologically and typologically arranged archaeological display.
Cultural significance
The collection ranks among the most important in Italy for understanding local history. Its strength lies in representing the entire trajectory of Bologna’s past—from prehistoric settlement through the Etruscan presence to the flourishing Roman municipality. The Palagi donation enriched the holdings with items of scholarly and aesthetic merit, while systematic excavation added contextual evidence that shaped modern understanding of the region.
