The Bronte stop sits on the Ferrovia Circumetnea, the historic narrow-gauge railway that loops around the base of Mount Etna in eastern Sicily. Built between 1895 and 1898 to a gauge of 950 mm, the line links the towns ringing the volcano and offers one of the most scenic rail journeys in southern Italy. Overview
The Ferrovia Circumetnea is a 950 mm narrow-gauge regional railway in Sicily. It was constructed between 1895 and 1898 to encircle Mount Etna. Bronte is one of the towns served on the western flank of the volcano.
History
The line was conceived in the late 19th century to connect the rural towns that ring Etna, which were otherwise isolated by the volcano’s lava fields and difficult terrain. Engineering work on the 950 mm gauge route was carried out between 1895 and 1898. The railway has remained in service as a regional line ever since, adapting over more than a century to the volcano’s periodic eruptions and lava flows.
What you see
From Bronte the train climbs and descends across the basalt terrain of Etna’s western slopes, passing lava fields, pistachio groves and the valley of the Simeto river. The narrow-gauge track and small period station buildings reflect the line’s late-19th-century origins. Views open repeatedly toward the volcano’s summit and the surrounding countryside.
Cultural significance
The Circumetnea is one of Italy’s best-known narrow-gauge railways and a living piece of industrial heritage, threading together the historic towns around Europe’s most active volcano. Bronte’s stop ties the railway to the town’s renowned pistachio-growing landscape.
