Church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami
A Renaissance church dedicated to the patron saint of carpenters, built above Rome’s ancient Mamertine Prison and restored to worship after severe damage.
At a glance
The Church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami stands in the Campitelli district near the Roman Forum, directly above the Mamertine Prison. Originally a rectory within the parish of San Marco Evangelista al Campidoglio, it was transformed into a diaconia in 2012. The building endured catastrophic roof collapse in 2018, destroying its decorated wooden coffered ceiling.
History
In 1540, the Congregation of Carpenters rented the pre-existing church of San Pietro in Carcere above the Mamertine Prison. By 1597, they commissioned a new church dedicated to their patron saint, San Giuseppe, designed by Giacomo della Porta. Construction continued in 1602 under Giovan Battista Montano, who designed the façade. After Montano’s death in 1621, his student Giovan Battista Soria oversaw the work. Antonio Del Grande completed the church in 1663. A restoration in 1886 included the construction of a new apse.
What you see
The church exemplifies Renaissance design with a carefully proportioned façade by Montano. Its interior was distinguished by an ornate wooden coffered ceiling—now destroyed. The structure’s position directly above the Mamertine Prison creates a unique archaeological and spiritual layering of Rome’s history, connecting early Christian martyrdom with later devotional practice.
Cultural significance
San Giuseppe dei Falegnami represents the devotional traditions of Rome’s artisan guilds, particularly the carpenter’s congregation. Its architectural lineage—spanning from Della Porta through Montano to Soria—documents a crucial period in Roman baroque development. The church’s location above an ancient Roman prison adds symbolic weight to its role as a place of worship and remembrance.
