Church and Convent of San Domenico Maggiore

A monumental Dominican complex in Naples’s ancient center, shaped by centuries of religious and intellectual life. Saint Thomas Aquinas taught theology here in the 13th century.

At a glance

San Domenico Maggiore stands in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, occupying a central position along the lower decumanus of Naples’s Greek-Roman street grid. The church and its adjoining convent form a vast architectural ensemble that reflects layers of development spanning nearly eight centuries.

History

The complex began in 1227 when Pope Gregory IX dispatched Dominican friars to Naples. They took residence in the ancient monastery of San Michele Arcangelo in Morfisa, which became the nucleus of what would develop into San Domenico Maggiore. The convent gained international renown when Thomas Aquinas arrived in 1272. He remained until 1274, teaching theology at the Studium established by Charles I of Anjou. This institution cemented the convent’s role as a center of medieval scholastic learning. Successive centuries brought architectural expansion and renovation, creating the monumental complex visible today.

What you see

The convent preserves spaces fundamental to Dominican life and intellectual work. The refectory served communal meals; the Chapter room hosted governance and spiritual instruction. The library housed theological texts essential to Dominican scholarship. Individual cells lined the dormitory—simple chambers where friars lived and studied, including the cell of Thomas Aquinas himself, a tangible connection to medieval scholasticism.

Cultural significance

San Domenico Maggiore embodies Naples’s role in medieval European intellectual history. The presence of Aquinas elevated the convent’s status and influence across Catholic theology for generations. The site represents continuous monastic tradition and the Dominican order’s commitment to learning and spiritual practice, visible in its material fabric and spatial organization.
