Chiuduno
A small Lombardian town whose origins trace to Celtic settlement and whose name preserves ancient linguistic roots, Chiuduno developed along a vital Roman road connecting Bergamo and Brescia.
At a glance
Chiuduno is a municipality of nearly 6,000 inhabitants situated between the Bergamo plain and the Valcalepio hills, approximately 15 kilometres east of Bergamo. The town’s layered history—Celtic, Roman, and medieval—is embedded in its topography and its archaeological record.
History
The village’s origins date to the era of Gallic domination, around the fifth century BC. Its name, originally Claudun, derives from the Celtic suffix –dun, used to denote settlements near hills or mountains. Roman colonization followed, Latinizing the name to Claudunum. The Romans transformed the settlement by establishing a crucial road connection between Bergamo and Brescia, positioning Chiuduno at the base of the Valcalepio hills as a strategic waypoint.
Medieval land reclamation intensified settlement patterns. Housing expanded significantly, supported by cereal cultivation and an extended road network including the Via Francesca, which served both commercial and military functions.
What you see
The oratory of Saints Cosmas and Damian marks a notable religious site. Near this structure archaeologists uncovered a celebrated military column, counted among the most important Roman epigraphs in the Province of Bergamo and testifying to the town’s Roman administrative significance.
Cultural significance
Chiuduno exemplifies the persistence of settlement patterns across overlapping cultural periods. Its Celtic name, preserved through Roman transformation and into the modern era, demonstrates linguistic continuity across millennia. The discovery of significant Roman inscriptional evidence underscores the town’s historical weight within the wider Bergamo region.
