Chiesa di San Paolo
A Gothic church built by Franciscan friars in Bari, erected on the site of a former Roman Messapian fortress and later reworked by Byzantine and Norman rulers.
At a glance
This Gothic church stands on land with layers of history spanning millennia. The Franciscans chose this location to establish their convent and religious community, constructing a sanctuary that blends medieval piety with the architectural legacy of its contested past.
History
The site originally held the arx—the fortified center of a Roman Messapian settlement. Following Rome’s decline, Byzantine and Norman powers successively occupied and modified the stronghold. When the Great Castle (Castello Grande) was built, the old fortress was dismantled and the land passed to the Franciscan order.
The friars acquired the abandoned site and constructed their convent there. The church and convent were likely completed in 1322, thanks to the patronage of Robert of Anjou, the Angevin king whose support enabled the Franciscans to establish this significant religious center.
What you see
The church exemplifies Gothic design as adapted by the Franciscans in southern Italy. Its structure reflects the order’s preference for simplicity and spiritual purpose over elaborate ornamentation, though the Gothic period brought pointed arches and vertical emphasis characteristic of the era.
Cultural significance
The church embodies the historical continuity of Bari, from Messapian times through Roman, Byzantine, and medieval periods. The Franciscan presence transformed the site from a military fortress into a center of spiritual life, anchoring the neighborhood through centuries of change.
