Chapel of San Galgano in Montesiepi

A modest Romanesque chapel marking the hermitage of a medieval knight whose sword, legend claims, remains embedded in stone as testimony to his spiritual surrender.

At a glance

The Chapel of San Galgano stands in Montesiepi, a rural sanctuary in Chiusdino near Siena. Built to commemorate the noble knight Galgano Guidotti—who renounced his worldly life to become a hermit—the chapel preserves artifacts and artworks spanning eight centuries. Most famously, it houses the legendary sword said to have been thrust into rock by Galgano himself.

History

Galgano Guidotti, a knight of noble birth, withdrew to Montesiepi as a hermit and died there in 1181. A primitive chapel was erected at the site and completed by 1185, establishing the sacred ground. During the 14th century, the structure underwent significant expansion: an atrium and side chapel were added, along with the drum’s upper section and a bell tower featuring two superimposed single-lancet windows. The 17th century brought a blind lantern above the roof, while the 18th century saw construction of a rectory and agricultural buildings on the chapel’s right side. Modern restoration work took place in 1924 and again in 1974, extending to adjoining structures.

What you see

The chapel displays Romanesque characteristics refined through medieval additions. Its bell tower, constructed from two stacked lancet windows, rises modestly above the structure. A blind lantern crowns the roof, a later baroque embellishment. The interior preserves frescoes attributed to the Lorenzetti workshop, including a striking “Madonna with three hands”—depicting the Virgin holding Christ with two arms while wielding a staff with a third, an anomaly whose origin remains unexplained.

Cultural significance

San Galgano represents the intersection of medieval hagiography and material devotion. The chapel documents the veneration of a local saint whose choice of asceticism shaped Tuscan religious landscape. The preserved sword transforms the site beyond architecture into a pilgrimage destination, blending legend with physical relic in ways that have captivated visitors for centuries.
