Catacombs of Saints Marcellino and Pietro
An expansive network of early Christian burial chambers beneath Rome’s ancient Via Labicana, decorated with restored frescoes and hosting the wealth of Rome’s Christian elite.
At a glance
These catacombs lie at the third mile of the ancient Via Labicana, now Via Casilina, at a locality known as ad duas lauros—”at the two laurels.” The shrubs, traditionally cultivated in imperial residences, gave the site its enduring name.
History
Excavated between the 3rd and 5th centuries AD, the catacombs served as an underground cemetery for Rome’s wealthier Christian population. The tombs preserve evidence of early Christian burial practice and the material circumstances of those who could afford elaborate underground chambers and commissioned artistic decoration.
What you see
Spanning 18,000 square meters and reaching 16 meters in depth, the catacombs form an authentic treasure of subterranean Christian Rome. The walls display wonderful frescoes left by the wealthy families interred here, now restored to their original splendor through laser restoration techniques. The Mausoleum of Santa Elena is also located within this complex.
Cultural significance
The catacombs document the evolution of Christian burial practice and artistic expression in late antique Rome. The quality and preservation of the frescoes illuminate the religious beliefs and aesthetic values of early Christian communities with substantial resources.
