Castle of Morsasco
A medieval fortress transformed into an aristocratic residence, Morsasco castle commands the rooftops of an ancient fortified village near Acqui Terme, its walls bearing the marks of centuries of noble occupation.
At a glance
Morsasco castle stands a few kilometres from Acqui Terme, accessed through the ricetto—a fortified refuge entered via an ancient gate set into the bell tower’s base. The 16th-century parish church of San Bartolomeo occupies the village below. The castle itself evolved from a military stronghold into a refined noble residence, its rooms expanded and embellished over three centuries.
History
First recorded in the 13th century, the castle passed through the hands of powerful families: Del Bosco, Malaspina, Lodron, Gonzaga, Centurione Scotto and Pallavicino. Each left its mark on the structure. The Lodron family commissioned the stone fireplace in the Salone Nuovo during the early 16th century. The Centurione Scotto princes installed a chapel dedicated to their patron saint, Catherine of Siena, in the early 18th century. The castle received illustrious visitors, including San Luigi Gonzaga.
What you see
The castle’s transformation from fortress to palace is visible in its grand halls and beautifully appointed rooms. The standout feature is the stone fireplace in the Salone Nuovo, a masterwork of early 16th-century craftsmanship. A pallacorda gallery—a covered tennis court—dates to the early 18th century, currently undergoing restoration. The internal chapel, built atop the inner courtyard’s well, blends ingenious spatial design with spiritual purpose. The park commands sweeping views across the Monferrato hills.
Cultural significance
Morsasco castle exemplifies the transition from medieval militarism to Renaissance refinement, documenting the domestic lives of Piemontese nobility. Its architectural layers reflect evolving tastes and technologies from the 13th to 18th centuries. The castle’s heritage extends to living traditions: it remains active as a venue for falconry displays, normally held each April, connecting present-day visitors to its historical military functions.
