Castelluccio

A remote Apennine settlement at 1,452 meters, devastated by the 2016 earthquake yet significant for its extreme altitude and dramatic mountain landscape.

At a glance

Castelluccio is a fraction of Norcia situated among the highest inhabited places in the Apennines. Perched on the Castelluccio Plateau within the Monti Sibillini National Park, the settlement commands expansive views toward Monte Vettore. The October 2016 seismic event destroyed much of the village, including its bell tower and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, though significant artworks were secured beforehand.

History

Castelluccio’s development reflects the harsh realities of high-altitude settlement in Central Italy. On 30 October 2016, a major earthquake nearly obliterated the town. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta and its bell tower were completely lost in the disaster. Pre-earthquake conservation efforts preserved several works of considerable historical and artistic value that had been housed within the church.

What you see

Before the 2016 earthquake, the settlement featured the Church of Santa Maria Assunta with its bell tower as focal architectural elements. The landscape itself dominates: the vast Castelluccio Plateau opens before the village, one of Central Italy’s largest elevated plains. Monte Vettore’s 2,448-meter summit rises prominently across the panoramic terrain. A scenic road connects the site to surrounding areas.

Cultural significance

Castelluccio represents an extreme example of human persistence in the Apennines, sustaining habitation at altitudes few comparable settlements achieve. The plateau supports distinctive ecology and has long fascinated researchers and visitors. The town’s climate station records some of Italy’s most extreme temperatures—on 2 March 2005, it registered −32°C, among the nation’s lowest ever recorded.
