Overview

Castello Ruffo stands on a rocky promontory above the town of Scilla, in Calabria, overlooking the Strait of Messina. The town is administratively part of the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria. Scilla is the traditional site of the sea monster Scylla of Greek mythology, a story tied to the dangerous waters of the strait.

History

The headland at Scilla has been fortified since antiquity because it controls one of the narrowest points of the Strait of Messina, the channel between Calabria and Sicily. The castle takes its name from the Ruffo family, a prominent Calabrian noble house associated with the site. Over the centuries the fortress was rebuilt and adapted to serve as both a defensive stronghold and a watch point over the strait.

What you see

The castle occupies the high rock that separates Scilla’s main beach from the historic fishing district of Chianalea below. From its walls there are sweeping views over the strait toward Sicily. The fortified mass, perched on the cliff, is the dominant landmark of the town and frames the seafront on either side.

Cultural significance

Castello Ruffo links the living town of Scilla to the ancient legend of Scylla, giving the site a place in both Mediterranean folklore and Calabrian history. As a fortress guarding the Strait of Messina, it belongs to the chain of coastal defences that shaped life along this stretch of southern Italy.
