Castello di Agazzano
Castello di Agazzano is a medieval and Renaissance fortified complex in the village of Agazzano, in the Province of Piacenza, Emilia-Romagna. Set among the gentle hills of the Piacentine foothills, the castle was a feudal stronghold of the Scotti family from the fifteenth century and survives today as a well-maintained historic estate featuring towers, a moat, formal Italian gardens, and an adjacent Romanesque parish church, making it one of the most scenically complete castle ensembles in the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza heartland.

Overview
Castello di Agazzano is part of the Castelli del Ducato di Parma e Piacenza network, a collection of some thirty historic castles scattered through the Apennine foothills of Emilia that together form one of Italy’s richest concentrations of medieval and Renaissance military architecture. The Agazzano complex is notable for preserving its moat, corner towers, and a formal garden — features that have been lost at many comparable sites. Private ownership has ensured a high standard of conservation, and the castle regularly opens its grounds and interiors for cultural events and guided visits.
History
The site of Agazzano was fortified in the medieval period to defend the hilltop village and control the surrounding agricultural territory in the foothills of the Piacentine Apennines. The castle became associated with the noble Scotti family in the fifteenth century, who undertook significant building campaigns that gave the complex its current form — four corner towers, a central courtyard, and a surrounding moat. The Scotti family retained ownership for centuries, and their heraldic presence can be seen in interior decorations. The castle has remained in private hands and has been carefully maintained as both a residence and a heritage tourism destination.
What you see
The castle presents a picturesque composition of red-brick towers with swallow-tail merlons rising above a water-filled moat, approached by a stone bridge that replaces the original drawbridge. Inside the walls, a courtyard connects the residential and service buildings of the complex. The formal Italian garden laid out beside the castle features clipped hedges, gravel paths, and ornamental plantings that contrast beautifully with the austere military architecture of the towers. The adjacent Romanesque church of the village rounds out an ensemble that captures several centuries of Piacentine architectural history in one compact site.
Cultural significance
Castello di Agazzano is among the most visited heritage sites in the Province of Piacenza, contributing to the cultural tourism circuit that draws visitors through the Emilian foothills in search of medieval and Renaissance Italy away from the crowded urban centres. Its inclusion in the Castelli del Ducato network gives it regional importance as part of a coordinated heritage offer that spans the former territories of the Farnese-ruled Duchy of Parma and Piacenza. The moat and tower ensemble is among the most photographed and recognisable medieval silhouettes in the province.
