Castello della Lucertola
The Castello della Lucertola, the “Castle of the Lizard”, stands at the top of Apricale, a hill village in the Province of Imperia in the Italian region of Liguria, about 30 kilometres west of Imperia and 120 kilometres south-west of Genoa. Crowning the steep medieval borgo, the castle dominates the cluster of stone houses that spill down the slope below it. Today it serves as the cultural heart of the village, hosting its museum and exhibition spaces.

Overview
The castle occupies the highest point of Apricale, one of the most picturesque hill villages of western Liguria. From this commanding position it watches over the maze of stepped lanes and stone arches that make up the historic centre. The building now functions as a museum and venue for cultural events in the life of the village.
History
Like many fortresses of the Ligurian hinterland, the Castello della Lucertola guarded a strategic village in the hills behind the coast, a frontier zone fought over by local lords across the centuries. The castle anchored the defensive heart of Apricale and shaped the tightly packed plan of the borgo that grew around and below it. Over time it lost its military role and was adapted to civic and cultural use.
What you see
The castle presents solid stone walls rising above the rooftops of Apricale, reached through the steep lanes of the village. Inside, its rooms now hold the local museum and temporary exhibitions. From its terraces and the adjoining piazza there are sweeping views over the surrounding hills and the dense fabric of the medieval centre below.
Cultural significance
Apricale is celebrated as one of the most beautiful hill villages of Liguria, and its castle is the symbol that crowns it. As home to the village museum and cultural events, the Castello della Lucertola keeps the borgo’s heritage alive at its very summit.
Practical information
The castle is open to visitors as a museum, with hours that vary by season and during special exhibitions. As it sits at the top of a steep medieval village, expect to climb stepped lanes on foot. Check the official website for current opening times and admission.
Getting there
Apricale lies in the hills of the Imperia hinterland, reached by road from the coast near Bordighera and Ventimiglia. Parking is generally found at the edge of the village, from which the castle is approached on foot through the historic centre.
