Castelfranco Veneto is a town and comune of the Veneto, in the province of Treviso. It is the third largest municipality in the province by population, after Treviso and Conegliano, and is centrally located between Treviso, Padua and Vicenza. The town is a walled city with a well-preserved medieval castle.

History

Castelfranco grew around its fortified core, established as a frontier stronghold in the central Veneto plain. The town is celebrated as the birthplace of the painter Giorgione, one of the masters of the Venetian Renaissance, whose house still survives within the town.

The most striking feature is the well-preserved circuit of medieval walls enclosing the historic centre. In a chapel of the town’s cathedral is displayed the Pala di Castelfranco, the celebrated altarpiece by Giorgione. The painter’s house also remains a focus for visitors.
