Castel Gavone

Castel Gavone is a medieval castle above the town of Finale Ligure in the Province of Savona, Liguria, historically the principal residence and stronghold of the Del Carretto marquisate. Built from the 13th century and significantly expanded in the 15th century under the patronage of Giovanni I Del Carretto, the castle is distinguished by its late-Gothic Tower of Diamonds — a polygonal tower faced with distinctive diamond-cut stone bosses — considered one of the finest examples of late-medieval civil and military architecture in Liguria. The ruins of the castle are now a protected heritage site and an important destination for medieval history enthusiasts visiting the Riviera.

Overview

Castel Gavone crowns the ridge above Finalborgo, the medieval borgo inland from Finale Ligure’s coast, looking out over the Ligurian Riviera and the Apennine foothills. It was the political and dynastic heart of the Del Carretto marquisate, one of the most powerful feudal families in medieval Liguria, and its architecture reflects both the military concerns and the courtly ambitions of a dynasty that maintained close ties with the Duchy of Milan and with Aragonese Spain. The castle fell definitively to Genoa in 1715 and was subsequently dismantled, leaving the dramatic ruins and the partially preserved Tower of Diamonds that survive today.

History

The castle’s origins date to the 13th century, when the Del Carretto family established Finalborgo as the administrative centre of their marquisate. The site was progressively fortified and expanded, with the most significant phase of construction occurring in the 15th century under Marchese Giovanni I Del Carretto, who transformed the castle into a residence combining defensive function with courtly prestige. The Tower of Diamonds, with its distinctive rusticated stone-boss facing, was built during this period and reflects the influence of contemporary north Italian architectural fashion. After a prolonged struggle, Genoa conquered the marquisate in 1598 and finally dismantled much of the castle in the early 18th century to prevent it from serving as a rallying point for anti-Genoese resistance.

What you see

The most impressive surviving element of Castel Gavone is the Tower of Diamonds (Torre dei Diamanti), whose exterior facing of diamond-cut stone bosses is immediately recognisable and unique in the Ligurian context. Surrounding the tower, the ruins of curtain walls, residential ranges, and outbuildings convey the scale of what was once a substantial noble residence and military complex. The hilltop position affords exceptional views over Finalborgo’s medieval roofscape, the coastal plain, and the sea beyond.

Cultural significance

Castel Gavone is one of the most historically significant medieval monuments in Liguria, directly linked to the Del Carretto marquisate whose cultural patronage also extended to the arts, producing connections with major Renaissance figures. The Tower of Diamonds stands as an exceptional example of late-Gothic decorative masonry in northern Italy and is listed among Liguria’s most important heritage sites. The castle forms the centrepiece of a heritage landscape that includes Finalborgo — itself an outstanding medieval walled town — and several other Del Carretto sites in the surrounding area.
