Casaprota
A small Lazio town whose medieval history reflects the power struggles of Sabina’s noble families, from the Benedictine Abbey of Farfa to the dynasties that ruled the highlands.
At a glance
Casaprota stands in the province of Rieti, in the Sabina region of Lazio. Its documented past spans from the early Middle Ages through the early modern period, marked by successive ownership among the region’s most influential aristocratic families.
History
The town’s origins trace to the 10th century, when the fundus Casaprotae formed part of the extensive holdings of the Abbey of Farfa, the powerful Benedictine monastery that dominated much of central Italy. Between the 11th and 12th centuries, ownership likely transferred to the De Romania family, the preeminent noble house of Sabina during that era.
Competition over regional power manifested in disputes over local churches. Documents record a clash between the De Romania and the Camponeschi, another prominent noble family controlling numerous castles in the Sabina highlands, concerning possession of the church of S. Angelo.
By the late 13th century, the Brancaleoni family—a branch of the De Romania—claimed Casaprota as their domain. They retained it until 1476, when they sold the town to the Orsini, one of central Italy’s most powerful dynasties. The Gentiles acquired it in 1604.

Cultural significance
Casaprota exemplifies the feudal landscape of medieval Lazio, where monastic institutions and aristocratic families controlled territory through interlocking claims to land and religious authority. The town’s succession of lords—from Farfa to the De Romania, Brancaleoni, Orsini, and Gentiles—illustrates how smaller settlements functioned as assets within the broader networks of power that defined the region.
