Casa Giglio

A social housing facility offering free accommodation to families with children undergoing long-term treatment at Regina Margherita Children’s Hospital, Casa Giglio combines practical support with community spaces designed to ease the isolation of parents during their children’s medical care.

At a glance

Casa Giglio is a purpose-built residential facility occupying 800 square meters within a restored wing of Turin’s former diocesan seminary. The complex provides accommodation for eleven families at no cost, alongside multipurpose rooms and common areas serving both residents and the wider Turin community.

History

The Giglio Onlus association was established on 6 March 2002 in response to the urgent needs of families managing extended hospitalizations at Regina Margherita Children’s Hospital. For seventeen years, the organization provided temporary apartments to families free of charge while maintaining close collaboration with hospital social workers. The expansion to Casa Giglio—inaugurated on 14 May 2019—represented a significant evolution, offering permanent social housing with enhanced community facilities. Renovation of the former seminary wing required approximately two years and an investment of roughly one million euros.

What you see

The building occupies a corner site at Via Cappel Verde 2 and Via XX Settembre, preserving the character of its predecessor—a seminary of the Diocese of Turin. The 800-square-meter facility integrates residential units with shared spaces designed for family interaction and community gathering, reflecting a contemporary approach to social housing architecture.

Cultural significance

Casa Giglio exemplifies the commitment of civil society organizations to addressing gaps in family welfare during medical crises. By providing free housing alongside psychological and social support, the facility acknowledges that childhood illness affects entire families and recognizes the particular vulnerability of parents away from home networks. The project demonstrates how heritage buildings can be repurposed to serve contemporary social needs.
