Carriage Pavilion of the Vatican Museums

A repository of papal transport through the centuries, from ornate sedan chairs to early motorcars, established beneath the Square Garden of Vatican City.

At a glance

The Carriage Pavilion preserves the vehicles and conveyances used by successive popes across generations. Located in a spacious underground chamber, the collection spans from hand-carried sedan chairs to nineteenth-century horse-drawn carriages and early automobiles.

History

Pope Paul VI founded the collection in 1973, housing it in a large room beneath the Square Garden. In 1991, the Carriage Pavilion became a detached section of the broader Historical Museum, which relocated to the Papal Apartment of the Lateran Apostolic Palace.

What you see

The exhibition occupies a substantial underground space designed to accommodate the scale of papal carriages and ceremonial vehicles. Visitors encounter ornate sedan chairs, nineteenth-century horse-drawn carriages, and early motor cars that document evolving papal mobility across different eras.

Cultural significance

The collection illuminates the practical and ceremonial dimensions of papal life. The Gran Gala sedan, commissioned for Pope Leo XII and in service through the pontificate of Pius XI, exemplifies the craftsmanship and luxury surrounding papal transport. The Vatican’s first locomotive, built in 1929, marks the modern era within papal infrastructure.
