CARGO21 — Luigi Longo Foundation
The Luigi Longo Foundation (Fondazione Luigi Longo) is a cultural institution based in Nizza Monferrato, in the Monferrato wine country of Piedmont, dedicated to the memory and legacy of Luigi Longo (1900–1980), a major figure of the Italian Communist Party and the international anti-fascist movement. The foundation preserves Longo’s personal archive, promotes historical research on 20th-century Italian political history, and manages CARGO21, a contemporary cultural space that hosts exhibitions, events, and educational programmes connecting historical memory with contemporary art and social engagement.

Overview
Luigi Longo was born in Fubine, in the Monferrato hills of Piedmont, in 1900, and went on to become one of the central figures of the Italian left in the 20th century — a founder of the Italian Communist Party, a veteran of the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War, and Secretary-General of the PCI from 1964 to 1972. The foundation bearing his name in Nizza Monferrato serves as both a research archive and a living cultural institution, linking the historical memory of the anti-fascist struggle to contemporary debates about democracy, memory, and social justice. CARGO21 is the foundation’s outward-facing programme of cultural events and exhibitions.
History
Luigi Longo’s political career began in the early 1920s at the founding congress of the Italian Communist Party in Livorno (1921), and he remained active in Italian and international left-wing politics for six decades. As commander of the Garibaldi Brigades — the Italian volunteer units fighting in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) — he earned an international reputation for courage and organisational skill. After World War II he served in the Italian parliament and led the PCI following the death of Palmiro Togliatti in 1964. Following Longo’s death in 1980, a foundation was established in his birthplace region to preserve his papers and promote historical awareness of the struggles and ideals he embodied. The CARGO21 programme was developed to give the foundation a contemporary cultural dimension beyond the archival and commemorative.
What you see
The foundation occupies premises in Nizza Monferrato — a market town known for its Barbera d’Asti wine production and its well-preserved historic centre. The archive holds documentation relating to Longo’s political life, including correspondence, photographs, and publications from the Spanish Civil War period and the post-war Italian republic. CARGO21 functions as a multipurpose cultural venue hosting temporary exhibitions, film screenings, lectures, and community events, with programming that engages both the historical legacy of anti-fascism and contemporary creative practices. The broader setting of Nizza Monferrato in the Monferrato hills offers a landscape of vineyards, medieval hill towns, and Baroque churches that forms a distinctive backdrop for cultural visits.
Cultural significance
The Luigi Longo Foundation holds a unique position in Italian cultural memory as an institution dedicated to one of the few Italian political figures who was central to both the domestic anti-fascist resistance and the wider international struggle against fascism in 1930s Europe. The preservation of his archive provides scholars and educators with primary source material for understanding Italian 20th-century political history. CARGO21’s contemporary programme ensures that this historical engagement remains alive and relevant to new generations in the Monferrato region.
